My name is Wendi Griffiths and I have been teaching piano and voice lessons for 12 years. I have been playing the piano for over 20 years and have participated in many competitions including Solo and Ensemble festivals and Utah State Fair Competitions. Additionally, I have been an accompanist for many different choirs and soloists as well as being an accompanist in the University of Utah Musical Theater Department for several years. I was awarded vocal and piano scholarships at Weber State University, where I attended as a Vocal Performance major. I have also participated in musicals in multiple capacities; as a performer, rehearsal accompanist and music director. My husband, who is a high school choir teacher, and I live in Sandy, UT.
PIANO STUDIO
In my piano studio, I teach a variety of methods. I try to find what will best help students individually. For my younger students, just starting out, I use an older Alfred method. It's called Alfred D'Auberge Piano Course. This method comes with three books in each level, a Piano Course book, a Recital Book and a Notespeller. The Notespeller is a music theory workbook. I have a strong belief that theory is important for every music student and try to make that the foundation of my teaching approach. I use a few other methods depending upon the age and ability of the student. Another of my basic staples is the Alfred Masterwork Classics series. With these, I use a different theory book, Concepts of Piano Theory. If you have further questions, please fill out the form on my Contact page. |
VOCAL STUDIO
In my vocal studio, I don't really use one particular method. I usually have each student working on at least one classical piece (folk songs, art songs, arias), more if they are more interested in singing classically more often, and one or two musical theater pieces, depending on their motivation for practicing. Even if they will be performing mostly in musical theater type settings, I still have them work on classical pieces. It is my belief that having a classical base will enable students to sing in various styles with a healthy technique. As with my piano students, I like my voice students to have at least a basic understand of music theory. It will help them a great deal in the long run.
